Scalp acupuncture is also referred to as head acupuncture and is a treatment where needles are penetrated to certain points on the scalp. It has been proven to be effective for stroke patients, childhood cerebral palsy, comatose patients, dementia and Alzheimer patients.
This method was invented by the Chinese scholar, Dr Jiao Shunfa in 1971. Since then, scalp acupuncture has grown in popularity in and outside of China and the treatment itself has been adopted by many practitioners. These techniques were later approved in 1984 by the World Federation of Acupuncture and Moxibustion Societies (WFAS) and head acupuncture became a recognised treatment in 1989.
A 60-year-old British man suffered from a cerebral infarction of the brainstem in 2007. The man was left with incomplete aphasia, dizziness and imbalance. Prof. Nie used the MS1, MS6, MS10 and MS11 points in the head and GB20, Ren23 and H5 for 15 sessions. The patient fully recovered.
A 45-year-old woman was diagnosed with a cerebral embolism in 2008. After spending one month in hospital, she had a right hemiplegia. The muscle strength of her right arm and leg severally worsened. Prof. Nie gave her scalp acupuncture treatment, as well as applying needles to points in her right arm and leg. After two months of treatment, the patient was able to return to work and her limbs recovered.
A 38-year-old patient had been suffering from epilepsy for over 30 years. As she got older, her epilepsy worsened and she began having seizures every two weeks and was being prescribed 1500mg of Sodium Valproate a day. After meeting with the patient in 2006, Prof. Nie prescribed herbal formulas and acupuncture treatment for 1 year. After the treatment, the patient’s seizures reduced to once every two months.
A 50-year-old male patient was sadly diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer’s. The patient received 6 months of scalp acupuncture treatment from Prof. Nie where she focused on the MS1, MS3, MS5, MS8 and MS9 points. After the treatment, the patient was clear of Alzheimer’s according to NHS tests.
